Things To Consider When Buying Unique Attic Ladders

By Debra Howard

Ladders are either inclined or vertical set of rungs or steps which could be either rigged that leans against walls or rope ones which hangs from the top of structures. The former are usually portable but could be permanently fixed to buildings, structures or equipment. They are commonly made of wood, metal, tough plastic or fiberglass.

These help you reach out places which are otherwise unreachable with other methods or helps climb other areas easily. This includes attics and other similar spaces which requires unique attic ladders in getting to them rather than using stairways instead. The following things must be considered when purchasing one for your home.

Determine where you would be placing your ladder by checking the access hole, including the ceiling framing, and their sizes. A slight enlargement is only needed for most openings but others would require a new hole made. Make sure the bottom part has a safe part also to rest with a space enough for maneuvering around.

Check what type of roof and ceiling framing you have which could either be trusses or floor joists and individual rafters. Standard ones can usually be easily reorganized while trusses have interlocking system and components that must not be cut. Seek for advice from professionals when you have a truss roof and it blocks your planned access location.

Most ladders will fit floor joists spaces as designed and if yours have that gap which is recommended then that is lucky or else it would require an additional framing. The joist may run on wrong direction with regard to your installation and fixing it is through cutting and surrounding the opening with joists and headers. Professionals must be asked for options in trusses though.

Make sure the attic floor has enough landing space where you could dismount and mount the ladder safely. It is important also to have enough headroom to prevent your head from banging against the framing when climbing. If space is not enough there then search for models that has compact designs made for closets and small areas.

These objects are sold in different lengths so be sure that you measure the distance between the floor and ceiling so you can buy an appropriate sized one. Its weight indicate the load capacity it can handle and it is sturdier if it can hold more. This will mean the total weight from the person climbing plus the load he carries must not amount more than the capacity.

They have a variety of features that helps in convenience, general usability and safety with the personal preference a deciding factor. Some ladders extend by folding itself out, have mechanisms that are similar to scissors, and telescope similarly to extension ones. Their angle depends upon your preference with it being more steep or not.

They can be outfitted also with handrails which means you would either hold the handrails when climbing or choose one without it and hold the rungs. Having either steps or rungs are possible but they commonly have the latter though. Find models with insulation to prevent the loss of conditioned air.
